PESSPA Subject Lead – Mrs Graham
PESSPA Link Governor – Mrs Glasper
At Stanley Crook Primary School we recognise that PE, Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression). Children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. At Stanley Crook Primary School we are committed to engaging all pupils in high quality PESSPA throughout each school day ensuring children understand how and why it is important to lead health, active lifestyles both now and in the future.
PE & Sport Premium
In 2013, the government began providing additional funding to Primary schools to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport they provide. This includes any carried forward funding.
The PE and sport premium must be used to secure improvements in the following 5 key indicators.
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.
- The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport
PESSPA Education Enterprise Report 2022-2023
The document below highlights how services delivered by Education Enterprise School Sports Partnership (EESSP) support schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE, School Sport & Physical Activity (PESSPA) to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. The Department for Education’s vision for the Primary PE and Sports Premium (PESP) is that ALL pupils leaving primary school should be physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. As an organisation our core belief is that we believe over time we can influence a lifelong commitment to sport, physical education and learning. We endeavour to see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators in all the schools we work in partnership with:

Swimming
Swimming is an important skill and can encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. All Local Authority schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.
The programme of study for PE sets out the expectation that pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]. Breathing is also an important part of this skill.
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Competition
‘Healthy Competition’ is a key component within Physical Education and School Sport and is part of the government’s plan to ensure all young people can live healthy and active lives. Sport has also been identified by the DfE as one of the five foundations for building character, helping young people develop resilience, determination and self-belief, and instilling values and virtues such as friendship and fair play. It can also help children and young people to connect with their peers, tackling loneliness and social isolation. At Stanley Crook Primary School we are committed to providing multiple opportunities for all children to participate in ‘Healthy Competition’.
